I am really excited about Project #3 because I've been curious about the VJ art process for a while now as well as projection mapping. For Project 3, I'm interested in exploring different surfaces to project onto. The running idea I have at the moment is to create a narrative about the folktale of La Llorona that I grew up with. I was thinking about my research and how a lot of it is based on water. Considering the music art project Drexciya, I've been considering the ways in which water shows up in Mexican Folklore. I thought of La Llorona and how my dad used to try to scare my brother and I with this folktale from playing too close to the acequia or ditch by my house when we were kids. I was very much afraid of this mythical woman who wails through the night in search of her lost children who according to the folklore had been drowned by her. I also never wanted to play too close to the ditch in fear of her haunting the acequia and of falling in. Using a mannequin head, a jewelry stand body, and a drapey textile like chiffon, I want to make an abstracted figure that can be projected onto. Playing with these differently arranged objects that will compose a body, i think it will be a fun challenge to make, especially because the objects will have different ranges of transparency versus opaqueness. Additionally I want to incorporate both found and recorded remixed videos pertaining to water, acequias, perhaps versions of the story and possibly moments of abstraction to depict the story in a new way. So far I don't want it to be such a creepy vibe but more of like an artistic approach to what La Llorona experiences as a water related person.
